It has been another crazy fast week here in Japan, and unfortunately one of my last! It has gone by so fast it is incredible. I remember like it was yesterday walking into the MTC leaving my family behind and meeting my host missionary who was going to Arizona and he took me to my room and I met my companion. As I sat in that room, all of us just leaving our families just thinking to myself, what have I gotten myself into. I can't do this. I felt much like Peter who willingly jumped out of his boat to go meet the Savior. He at first did it, had confidence because the Savior was right next to him. At first I thought I could do it. I had been called of God. How can I fail? But then I remembered that I had to learn a new language and a new culture. I had to go to a far away land where essentially I had 0 friends. Not one. And I sunk and fell into the depths of despair like Peter. But as soon as I asked for help I got it. Jesus immediately strectched out his hand and saved me. I have fallen many time sense that experience and unfortunately will continue to fall but every time I have fallen, Christ has been there to help me up, and put me on my feet. I thought these two years would never end, but contrary to that...I dont know where they have gone. I am sad to leave Japan. I have learned to love the people and the culture that is here. Eventhough sometimes I might complain about the food...most of it is good, and the stuff that isn't good, some Japanese people don't even like it. It has been the greatest experience in my life...one that I would never trade in a million years.
I would also like to thank everyone who has said a prayer for me. it has helped more than you can imagine. I'd like to thank people for the countless letters that I have received. It would have been much harder to serve without your love and support. Thank you. I'd also like to thank my two younger brothers, for their help and their encouragement. And my parents, there probably hasn't been a day gone by where they haven't thought about what I was doing. Thank you!! You have been so great to me and have helped me more then you can imagine!! I am excited to return and see you again!!
As I have pondered about what to say in this letter, I have thought over the experiences that I have had over the past two years. The amount that I have grown. I have thought about the hard times, but, honestly I can't remember all the hard times...they seem like a blur. Honestly one of the hardest weeks of my whole mission was a few weeks ago. Nothing went right, members were angry with us and all we were trying to do was serve the Lord. That is now over and everyone is forgiven. No one is angry and it just went by like a moment in time. I remember some of the happiest times like they were yesterday eventhough they happened months ago. I remember being lost, countless times and then out of no where finding someone, or being where we needed to be. Actually when I first came to Hamamatsu I had that experience. We went and visited a less active member and they weren't home. and so we decided to start heading back because English class was going to start and we were supposed to go to that. Unfortunately we started heading back and I got way turned around. We had been biking for about 30 minutes and were just going in what it felt like circles. We had seen the same building and same convenience stores. Well, we called the other missionaries and asked them too help us with englsih class because we were going to be late. We decided to go visit the same less active again because we were way close. That time they were home. We talked to them for a while scheduled a next appoitment and continued meeting with them. She has sense given us 3 referrals and her daughter has started coming back to church. If we wouldn't have gotten lost we might have never found that family because they lived an hour away by bike but because we got lost and just didn't give up we were able to help God's children. I think that is one of the biggest things I have learned on my mission. Don't give up!!! Life isn't always going to be easy just keep on trying and the Lord will provide a way. And you will be blessed 10 times for not giving up!!

What a week!! (February 26, 2012)
Well, I thought that maybe towards the last few weeks of my mission that my life might calm down and I would just finish my mission normal but that is about exactly the opposite of what's going to happen...I shouldn't be too surprised but I had a pretty busy week.
I don't think lately I have talked too much about food but this Friday I went to a member's house and it wasn't what they gave me but how much. The other two missionaries couldn't come so we had to eat theirs and ours. Basically it wasn't a 3 course meal but a 3 meal course...haha but it was really good. It was chicken kastu (It's like deep fried breaded chicken) but this thing was huge. I'm saying like a foot long. I'm not sure but it was huge. We also had okonomiyaki which is Just like a pancake except with vegetables and octopus in it. I learned how to make it so we can have it when we get home. I actually love octopus. It doesn't really have a taste it's just a mind over matter thing and it's pretty good.
My mom asked me what I am going to eat before I go home but I am going to give an answer that every one probably expects. SUSHI!! I'm pretty sure Japanese sushi is better than American sushi but it's cheap and good so I will have that. I will also eat gyoza because it's my favorite meal. It's actually Chinese food but hamamatsu is famous for good gyoza. Its just meat and vegetables wrapped in a really small flour shell and then fried. It's way good.
Well I went to this place called Numazu which is on the opposite side of this zone (2 1/2 hours by train). But we went there and it's just pouring down rain. And they had an appointment an hour away by bike up hill. I thought just my luck. I wasn't too happy about the situation because I didn't have too much rain gear and I didn't have a change of clothes. But as I was biking up the hill basically through a river because the rain was coming down so hard I started thinking. You only have a few more times doing this...in a month you will be home and probably not be riding bikes to go help someone. Then I started thinking about the person we were going to go help. I actually met her a year and half before when I was in Fuji so it wasn't hard for me to think about her. She is in an old person's home because she can't walk and or remember things too well. We met another member than and in the middle of this...hospital we sang hymns to her...I am not that good at singing but there was such a peaceful feeling that could be felt in that hospital. She tried to sing I am a Child of God with us and even though she had a hard time remembering the words and she has a tongue disorder, she somewhat sounded like an angel (maybe becuase I was singing right next to her). But all of the sudden that painful journey became well worth it. We helped a Daughter of our Heavenly Father who desperately needed it and the Joy that you receive from that is priceless!! My wet clothes seemed much less important. The puddles that most people call shoes I was wearing didn't matter any more because of the Spirit that was felt. And as we were walking out a patient asked us why we were there. We said we have come from this place to help a friend who happens to be a member of our church. The lady (who is slightly crazy) said that is really cool, I want friends like you. Then she ran away. Through simple acts of service we can show others the light of Christ and by thinking of others we will forget about our problems.
I also learned another lesson this week. It has to deal with a new investigator and the member who gave her as a referral. It's a really long story but in the end the member who gave us the referral and the referral won't come to church because of a problem that happened over a year ago. And the member that offended the other member doesn't even know he did anything wrong. It is sad to see that people stop coming to church because members in the church make mistakes. The church is perfect but the members aren't. We can't let others ruin our relationship with God. After I have seen this happen and cause people to go less active, I have learned that we need to forgive and forget.
I feel preachy saying that but people's lives are changed for the worst because they won't forgive people. Is it easy...No, but it needs to be done.
And on that note I will say goodbye until next week.

The drama in a missionary's life (February 19, 2012)
The investigator that got ran over by a car is doing a little better...we were able to meet with him and so that was good but he can't move very much. He moved his legs which is good but he broke his wrist in a bunch of places. He also got this huge gash on his forehead and he hurt his neck which is the thing I think everyone is most worried about. He was happy to talk to us but he has a long rode to recovery. It's sad, but it was an accident. The lady ran a red light but I don't think she meant to. But she was un injured. He could probably sue her for a lot of money but she is a young mother and so he says I have a family and I wouldn't want to be sued. She didn't mean to hurt me so I will forgive her. I thought that was really cool. He said that even if he took her money it wouldn't solve his heath issues. Money can't solve anything, I still have my family so I'll be fine. Truer words could not have been spoken. Yes we need money to survive but I think he did a really hard think but it is way good. And by the way his car got destroyed. It looked pretty bad. They were both going about 45 when they hit.
Well, we had an interesting experience this week. I had more than one but this one is really cool but sad but exciting. So on Wednesday morning at 10 30 we had an appointment with a member. I actually was on companion exchanges but we get to his house and he is just like let's go visit my friend. So of course we are like sounds good. But he wouldn't really tell us too much about the friend just we were going to go talk to her briefly. We leave and ride our bikes about 20 minutes with this member and get to a barber shop and there is a lady there waiting for us with like chairs set up looking like we were going to teach a lesson. Me and the missionary I was with are both pretty experienced (Old) missionaries, but I don't think either of us have had a surprise lesson. We sit down and the member introduces us and says these are the missionaries and they can heal you. and then looks at us and was like give her a blessing. Me and the missionary look at each other and like wait a minute she knows nothing. So we start talking to her about the people we teach and problems they have to overcome. Then we talk about baptism for a little bit followed by the apostasy and the restoration of the church, and how the authority has been restored on the earth again so we can use Jesus Christ's Authority to give you a blessing. Then the member is like we really don't have time so can you give her a blessing. So we did, and after we finished she just cried for like 3 minutes and no one spoke. Then we stood up and talked to her more. Then we asked her to be baptised, but the member didn't let her answer he just said, no for her, which I think she would have said yes which kind of made me angry because we weren't really asking him. But that's ok, everyone makes mistakes. Then we tried to schedule a next appointment, and the member answers for her and says no. So that wasn't nice but I was like alright she is your referral. But I gave the lady our number. and she took it, but she is still crying while all this is happening. Then she is like why am I crying!??! And we talked about the Holy Ghost for like 5 minutes and then at the end of that she was still crying and she is like...Why am I crying!!!??!!! and she's like I have a feeling running up and down my body and it is just so warm. Then we talk and when we left she was still feeling the same way. Then on Sunday she called us and talked with my companion for 30 minutes. She has researched many other churches and there isn't anything like this chruch. She said she is worried about her family being against her but she wants to meet again!! So we are actually going to talk to her later today. So that's exciting. It was pretty interesting expereince but this is the edited version, I'll probably tell you the longer version when I get home but it was pretty cool.

Sightseeing (February 12, 2012)
Well, We went to a near by lake today and took pictures and we also went to the Hamamatsu castle. It was really pretty. It was pretty small for a castle but it was a nice view of the city.
It will be way good. I found some cool things today.
Well, we had some interesting things happen in the mission this week.
1. One of the missionaries in Hamamatsu got lost so President Baird told me to wait in the apartment and have the other 2 go out and look for him. It took them a little over an hour but found him. He just got a little turned around. But I was alone for a while. It was very interesting. I didn't know what to do. I cleaned up a little and exercised. It was pretty interesting. Kind of lonely because I didn't have any one to talk to.
2. Mom im not sure if this is what you are talking about but I don't think I get to go to the temple in Tokyo but I want to. But anyway, President Baird has asked me to go to Tokyo to accompany a missionary in my zone who needs an interview for college, so on the 3rd of March I get to go up to Tokyo. I don't know if that explains how excited I am but I am pretty excited. I get to ride the bullet train up there and don't have to pay...but I'm way excited.
3. Well, tomorrow is zone conference and so we have to give some training. That's exciting.
4. This isn't interesting but our best investigator got in a car accident and got 10 stitches in his head. And hurt his arm and leg really bad. It is really sad but we are giving him and his family a lot of support. But really tragic.
5. We met a lot of less actives this week, I guess that's not out of the ordinary but one comes out and the first thing she says is welcome and the second thing she says is I have been thinking a lot about repentence. Then we asked her if there were any reasons why she is not going to church and she said, I don't like crowds of people but I should go. Well, she came to church yesterday.
6. Another Less active we met had never seen the Book of Mormon before and then said he was pretty busy with work...too bad the wife came in and said he was out of work. Basically what I'm saying is we get to go meet them again
It was a pretty interesting week. As the days count down there is just more and more I want to do and i just keep getting buisier and buisier

New Companion...(last) (February 5, 2012)
Good afternoon
Well I got a new companion!! He is pretty cool but not the Japanese companion I had in mind. I mean let's be honest, when we think of a Japanese person we think of a skinny person who is a little shorter and has like all the latest techinology...right? Well my companion is about as tall as me but is way bigger than me. I mean he is a pro swimmer. He actually tried out for the Olympics but only got 4th or something so he wasn't able to go. (Ya he's only the fourth fastest in Japan, not that fast) On top of that he was a teacher at a school before his mission. So that's my companion, but he is from Fukushima. If you don't know where that is, well I wouldn't be too surprised but a little. That is the place where the nuclear reactor blew up. Ya pretty dangereous. His family was all ok but of course living in that area is kind of dangerous. And on top of all of that he is a convert of about two years who after the earthquake left his family to serve the Lord (ya he's been out like 7 months) So he makes a pretty good missionary. No but it's really fun working with him. Between the two of us we can get about anyone to talk to us...well that's not exactly true but we do a pretty good job.
Well yesterday we had a pretty good experience. About two weeks ago we went to this less active's (Family of 4) house. None of the members knew him but me and my companion have felt a number of times to go over to his house. We went over and met the wife and the son (Nonmembers) and scheduled an appointment for yesterday. Yesterday when we went over, it was awesome. The whole family was there ready to have a lesson. We actually ran it like a family home evening so we brought a game and a snack to eat. As we talked to them about prayer and the Holy Ghost they excepted everything like we were teaching at a member's house to a member. Then we finsh the lesson and started talking to them. After a while we left and as we walked out and my companion looks at me and was like are you sure they aren't active members. That's how amazing this family is. The dad hasn't been to church in 20 years and the kids are 17 and 16. You can feel that they love each other and want to learn and meet with us. It was incredible. I wish you could have been there.
We also had a Sri Lankin come to church this week. I'm not exactly sure where that place is but he is way cool. The only problem is he can't speak Japanese, just English. He struggles because he can't understand but he was able to make a lot of friends and he went over to a member's house with us and the ysa so it was really good. He says that he feels something different than at other churches.
I also bore my testimony because the bishop like called on me. I mean I made eye contact with him and he gave me "the nod" It was pretty good but it is sad because I don't have that many more opportunities to do this. Like I'm finally getting good at it, come on!! Haha.

What a week (January 29, 2012)
Well we had a way good last week. We met a lot of different people and had a lot of opportunities to teach, which would make any missionary happy. We also had the opportunity to go to Shizuoka and meet with the stake president and President Baird.
We had many great experiences this week, one of which was with a man named Kono Kyodai. He was the first bishop of this ward and used to own his own company, and was very rich. But unfortunately he had some problems and his company went bankrupt and now he is very poor, just getting by. But anyway we were talking at the church and he was teaching us about the pride cycle in the Book of Mormon. But after we had that conversation we were going to do this activity that helps people give us referrals. And so like we were about to ask the questions and he just gave us three referrals. We didn't even ask a question. And he said that we should visit Saya who is 20 years old and he met her walking. He said when you have the time go visit them. We went and visited that afternoon and she was way nice. She was confused when two gaijin came to her house and we taught about the plan of salvation and then scheduled a next appointment. The member had already given her pamphlets and a Book of Mormon which was really cool. The former Bishop said that the spirit said he needed to talk to her. The truth is the only time he has ever met this lady is when he is out walking. It is really cool how God puts people in our way to help!!
The meeting with the stake was way good as they expressed their desire for dendo. President Baird says its our duty to help the stake become missionaries then he points at himself and my companion and say we are going home soon and then he points at me and says he is going home REAL soon. It was funny and sad but true. We are here to help the members and What a good experience it has been.

President Baird says its our duty to help the stake become missionaries then he points at himself and my companion and say we are going home soon and then he points at me and says he is going home REAL soon. It was funny and sad but true. We are here to help the members and What a good experience it has been.

What to say?? (January 22, 2012)
It was a very interesting week, we went to Nagoya on Tuesday for training, Wednesday 4 spokes on my bike broke and it took all day to fix. Thursday was planning day and eikaiwa, amoung other things. Friday we went to another area that is further away than Nagoya but in our zone. Saturday it rained all day (which was the first time it has rained all year so that was cool but it was freezing. After being in the freezing rain for 6 hours we came home but it was good. But acutally we met with two part member families but didn't go inside. We just talked at their door for a while, so it was cold and wet. we scheduled appointments and talked about how to help their nonmember husbands. Then Sunday we had meetings until four and then went home and ate a feast. We are trying to help the ward with mutual, which is a slow progress. We are now doing it 2 times a month which is better than 0 times but we still have some work to do. It's hard when there are only 14 total young men and young women and only about 5 are active. But we are in charge of it. We are like young men advisers which is a cool calling. I definitely can't complain. Then Sunday night we met a part member family, They are Peruvians, but the kids speak perfect Japanese. I think we will be able to meet them again. The dad is a member but no one else is. The funny thing that happened was the mom pulled out a hymnbook and started singing for us even though she is not a member, so that was cool.

This morning we taught a lesson to a Peruvian, his wife is a member and he seems to have a lot of interest, he wanted to meet tomorrow but we are busy, unfortunately. This week (January 15, 2012)
My week wasnt too exciting, but it was busy. We are trying to continue forward but we are so busy we don't know what to do sometimes...haha.
We are trying to work with a part member family, the mom is less active and none of the kids are members, and niether is the father. We have a family home evening appointment a week from Saturday with them so that should be good but the grandfather that lives there hates us. I don't understand but the first time we met him he slammed the door in our face and the second time he saw us he ignored us but yelled to the family wierd foreigners came!!!!! and then walked right passed me as I tried to start a conversation with him. In his defense I am kind of wierd but it was just funny, what can you do. But besides him we are excited for the family home evening. Another active family will join us, so that will be fun, there will be 6 kids and a lesson I hope, haha.
Brazilians are funny because we went and visited one family and they are less active have come to church once since I have come to Hamamatsu and when we got there the dad was just in his garments and they talked about how cool the temple was because they went last weekend, kind of funny but starnge, they gave us cheese fondu so thats cool.
We are starting a missionary class during sunday school. We are going to be teaching members how to be missionaries!! so that should be fun. We will be using pmg and there will be a commitment at the end of every class to spark the missionary fire in the ward. We have a good ward for the most part. There are a few people who just no matter what you do won't help you at all, bu what can you do.

Sorry (January 9, 2012)
Sorry about getting on late but that is way exciting about Josh. How is it going to work this time? You should skype me when he opens it. just kidding but seriously you should.
It is pretty windy here in Hamamatsu which makes it cold but that is all good.
Everything else is pretty normal. My zone is doing ok. People stress me out sometimes but thats ok.
I had a question but forgot.
O ya yesterday we had a ward marathon activity right...it was fun. I took 3rd place and beat the bishop. haha. And he was a rugby player. No but it was way fun we only ran 5k but it was pretty far because none of us did any training. We are all super soar today. Like anytime any of us move we let out big grunts. I'm going to try to start getting in the habit of running again so I don't get fat when i go to America. Its going to be a forever ongoing struggle.
Well the activity went really well. We had some investigators come and some less actives that we are working with come. The ward was very helpful and be friended them. Two of the families that came had children and the children didn't want to go home. So they ended up staying here for a long time. another family that came lives really close to the church. We have this activity in our mission called pivot and we just invite all the people around our church to the activites once a month. It is more to be good neighbors and friends then to get investigators but of course if we can find investigators that way it would be good...it's more of a long term thing I think. But any way one family came to the Christmas party and the party yesterday and she said that when she was a kid she used to come to the church all the time..now she has kids of her own. So thats pretty cool. At the party we ate mochi. Mochi is just smashed rice and then they put interesting stuff on it. My favorite is kinako because it tastes a little bit like peanut butter...the kids also like that one. The smashing the rice is the best part because we take a giant hammer and smash it...I did it last year and sent pictures but that was really fun!! Everyone enjoyed themselves.
Last week meeting with investigators was a big miss but we were able to meet with a lot of less actives and help them. One actually came to church. So that was cool. He is a really a good guy and like helped half the ward get baptized like with out him Hamamatsu would be really small but he doesn't see eye to eye with the bishop and some members so he stopped coming to church. He is a big help to us though so that is really good. He also came to the party which is good.

Happy new years!! 明けましておめだとう (January 2, 2012)
Well, I hope everyone had a nice safe and happy new years. This year has started out with a bang, and by that I mean we had more meal appoitments in the last 3 days then I have had since I came to Hamamatsu. That might not be exactly true but it's close, In 3 days we have had 5 meal appointments. Yesterday it was way too much...all four of us almost died due to food overload. It was crazy, and by the time we finished at the appoitments over half the food was still left. We tried our best but it wasn't good enough. My mom will be happy to know that i have gained some weight this week.
We had a lot of delicious food just too much to describe but one member decided to put the steak and the fish right next to each other on the missionary side of the table and almost all the steak was gone and like almost 0 of the fish was gone. It was kind of funny but I mean obviously who is going to choose the fish when there is delicious steak right next to it...no one. They also had octopus salad which has become one of my favorite Japanese dishes...you can buy octopus in America right?!? If not I'm in trouble...haha. What else did they have, they had like the 3 inch long fish things that you just eat whole, little crunchy but not bad. For some reason like 3 families made this delicious potato cheese cassarole thing that was way good. I haven't really ever seen it in Japan so I was surprised but it was way good. We also had oyster rice which is pretty good. Of course we had sushi, how can I forget that. It was good. There are some foods that Japanese people eat this time of year no matter what and one is mandrin orange (by the way we have over 200 in our apartment so if any one wants one just ask), but another thing is mochi. Mochi is pounded rice. It is interesting but they but this powder on it that kind of tastes like peanut butter...maybe, I don't know exactly but it's pretty good.
Well this time of year is really interesting in Japan, almost everyone goes back to their home and meets all their family and they pay respect to their ancestors. It's a very important time of the year for Japan. Most business men get about a week off work, so I'm sure they enjoy it, and its just a time for families. I think it is interesting how important families are to the Japanese people.
We are working with this part member family and the wife is one of my favorite people ever...(She gave me bacon last week) ya but anyways her husband is less active, mainly because of work and they have 5 children who are all less active and all are married to non members. So they got lost and they live really close to a place we got lost so we went and stopped by and were able to meet the non member son in law for the first time. He looks pretty cool, but some people when they see us run away but he didnt so that was good. We talked to him for a while but the member really wants us to help him but anyway on Sunday her husband and her daughter came to church so that was exciting!! It was a great weekend.
Have a great weekend and have fun, set some good goals for this new year...the year of the dragon!!! haha.

Christmas Week (December 25, 2011)
Well, We had a nice Christmas week here in Japan. Actually yesterday it snowed a little. I'm not sure if it would usually count as a white Christmas but I will count it this time. We had a bunch of Christmas parties that we went to this week so that was good. We actually went with some investigators and they really enjoyed going so that was good. We had a lot of fun talking with everyone about the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I'm way sad Christmas is over. The big hype and now it's just gone. It is always a fun month. It wasn't quite the same hear in Japan but it was still pretty big.
We actually have been trying to give people presents and gifts but everytime we have tried to give something to someone we end up coming home with twice as much stuff. It goes to show that you can't give the Lord the crust of bread without getting a loaf in return. We actually went to this member's house just to drop of a little goody bag that we made and she ran inside and came back with like a chicken platter, apologizing that that is all she had. There were like 10 pieces of chicken on it. All we gave her were a few treats and she gave us a ton a food in return and wouldn't stop apologizing because it was so little. And I'm just standing there like you gave us your Christmas dinner, it is plenty, actually it's too much!! But she just kept apologizing. My companion and I were able to feel the Christmas spirit as we visited everyone and we saw immediate blessings for spreading the Christmas spirit. I hope everyone enjoy(s)(ed) Christmas and have a happy and safe new years!!!

Christmas Party! (December 18, 2011)
Well we had a great week before Christmas and it was topped of by a wonderful Christmas Party. We had a great week preparing for this Christmas party, and we weren't sure how many people were going to come. We invited a lot of people and worked really hard to get as many people there as possible. It was a great program. It started at 5 and the young men and young women put on a nativity and did it by shadows. They made cut outs and made them move on the projection screen. It was a good and then the primary was the angel choir and then there was another choir that sang Silent Night. It was way good. Way spiritual. Then after that we watched the Christmas devotional and that was really good. Then we had a huge feast and there were so many people that we couldn't all fit in the cultural hall...no one could sit down we were all standing. So in our ward there are about 80 active members and we think that about 150 people came to the party which is a huge success. It was so great. The four of us misisonaries couldn't keep up with all the people we didn't know there. It was really ridiculous. I tried to talk with everyone but it was just too much.

忙しい (busy) (December 11, 2011)
We have had another extremely busy week. We can't manage to stay in our own area for too long. We had the opportunity to go down to Nagoya and hear a general authority. It was a very good meeting. I was able to learn a lot. We talked a lot about trials and why we are given trials. It's very interesting. I think in the April conference, Elder Christopherson told a story that explains it best. He talked about a kern bush and then how Hugh B.Brown didn't get a promotion because he was a member. He later learned that God was preparing him to become an Apostle. It's very interesting the way trials can help us.
When I was traveling to Nagoya I had the opportunity to talk to some high school students on the train. It was probably one of the most interesting experiences because I never expected it to happen in Japan but they saw that I was a Christian and we started talking about Christmas. After that, they were like do you know Adam, and I'm like of course. They were all shocked and then I started talking about the fall and prophets. It was way cool because 99.9999% of Japanese high school students don't know any of that so it was cool to talk about it with them. They are doing a play at their high school about it so I thought that was really cool.
Englsih class is going really well. We are starting to teach free private lessons but basically the free private lessons are lesson 1 in Englsih and it has gone really well. Two people have shown a lot of interest so that is good. Along with that we are still doing Book of Mormon Englsih class and all the students are still reading the Book of Mormon so it is going great.
When we came here to Hamamatsu, the Bishop was kind of cold...like he wouldn't really talk to us. He would just shake our hands and kind of ignore us but yesterday he came up to us and shook our hands and then one of the speakers didn't show up so he asked us to speak in Sacrament Meeting. I thought that was a blesing because it shows that he trusts us. Our topic was Duty to God and how it has helped us. Funny thing is mom and I last week emailed about what I learned from Brother Horsley, so I talked a little bit about that and the great experience that it is and how much it can help. It went pretty well but I am thankful for my leaders and parents that helped me to prepare for this mission. Well, honestly nothing will prepare you fully for a mission but you can try to get as close as possible.
I am thankful for the opportunity I have to be in Japan for one more Christmas. It is a speacial place. Have a great time and be thankful for this time of the year.

Abundant blessings (December 4, 2011)
Well this has been a great week as we try to get in to the Christmas Spirit. It's a little different here. This year Christmas is on a Sunday so some people in Japan will have a day off but it is not a holiday, unforunately. We do have the privilege of seeing Christmas lights every once in a while and stores are pretty decorated...but it's very different from America. If you ask a Japanese person what they do for Christmas they say eat cake. Giving presents isn't a big thing here in Japan. But nonetheless we are preparing for a huge Christmas Party at church. It is going to be way fun and the youth have put a lot of time into it. I am way excited as we try to get people not of our faith to come to this party.
Another thing that I had the opportunity of doing was eating steak. There is this Peruvian family in our ward. It is a very sad story because the whole ward and even the missionaries thought he had moved back to Peru. For some reason me and my companion felt the need to visit him even though everyone else thought he moved. Two weeks ago we met him and his wife. It was a way good experience for me to know that God cares for all his Children and that eventhough sometimes people maybe forgotten by other people, God never does forget them. But last week they invited us over to their house and fed us steak...it was way good. If that isn't a blessing I don't know what is.
Another blessing I had was to go back to Fuji and meet many people I served with and worked with a year before. To my surprise some people remembered me...actually a lot of people remembered me. As I was able to travel to Fuji I thought of how much I had grown and changed over the past year. How much I have seen the hand of the Lord in my life and I have been blessed. It was also a giant blessing to go back to a ward that I have previously served in and meet all the members again. The point of the visit is to train the ward mission leader so that he can better work with the missionaries and the members more efficiently, so it was good but always nerve racking. It has been exactly a year since I have left Fuji and I am so grateful I got to go back and meet friends. It was such a huge blessing to me. It just reminds me that the Lord knows and answers our prayers in miraculous ways.
I am way excited for this Christmas eventhough I will be away from Family and Friends but it will be a time to share Christ's love with people who desperately need it.

Thanksgiving (November 27, 2011)
Well...thanks for the package. Unfortunately I didn’t get the package until Saturday but it’s all good. I have eaten a lot of it and it is really tasty. Thanks so much. I think the other missionaries would really like to thank you for the bacon bits. They are almost gone. They make bacon sandwiches with bacon bits. So I think they would express their thanks.
Also whenever I go to people’s houses and show them pictures they always say mom is cute and looks really young so I figure mom would like to hear that.
Ya thanksgiving was good I guess...it was sad but good. We tried to find a service to do and couldn’t so we decided to donate blood. That was way fun. My companion almost fainted because he had never done it before. They only took 400 ml so it’s like nothing. It is the most you can give...I think in America you can give like 800 ml but I’m not sure.
Then we ate a lot of dinner. The package didn’t come so I made this stew stuff...it’s kind of like potato soup but obviously not as good. Elder Brown made this fried Chicken stuff. Then Elder Amussen made mashed potatoes and Elder Imaizumi made this fried beef stuff which was really good.
The sad part was we had a huge party planned in Ogaki with a big turkey but I guess there is nothing you can do.
The baseball activity was way fun. We are already planning the next one!!
Which reminds me...what do you do for mutual...my ward wants to start doing mutual every week but they don’t know what to do. I said we would come up with ideas to help them but I forgot what we did...I know we did mission prep and watched the Office at Brother Horsley’s but what can they do with a young men and young women with a total of 6 to 8 people with very little leader support and people live far away??? Any Suggestions?
We got some new investigators this week. One is really good. He is Brazilian and his wife is a member. In the lesson his wife keeps pushing him to get baptized and wants him to baptize their 4 year old daughter when she gets old enough. He also has interest in eternal families but feels obligated to his Catholic family. I think he has a lot of potential though.
We also teach one English class a week, so that’s fun but we got a new investigator from that. He believes in God and we taught him how to pray and he offered a great prayer. It was heartfelt. He is awesome and hopefully he will come to church next week...unfortunately we will be in a different ward next week, because we have to train their ward mission leader. I’m really excited because it is the Fuji ward. That will be really exciting to see all my old friends.
Some more interesting news is that President Stevenson is coming to visit our mission next week so we will have a zone conference. He is The Area President and was the Nagoya mission president before President Treveller so that is very exciting. I also get to go to Nagoya this week for zone leader training. So we have a pretty busy next couple of weeks.
I went on a companion exchange with Elder Adachi last week so that was way fun. It was cool to serve with him again. He’s a good missionary. I told him I’d come visit him in July or August and he said he’d come pick us up from the airport if he has a car. So that’s cool.
I bought a suit and it was half off...I was so excited...it is pretty cool but guess what the waist size is 32 inches. It actually fits pretty well though.
Yesterday we had a really good lesson in Sunday School. We talked about thankfulness and how we should be thankful for the Holy Ghost in our lives. We read this book and it was really touching (I actually ordered it) but it talked about all the different times when the spirit has touched people and gave them that peaceful feeling. As I heard that I thought how thankful I am for the Holy Ghost and how much it has helped me in my life, especially getting transferred to a new area with a companion that does not know the area at all. I have seemed to somehow be able to find the places we need to go magically. The funny thing is every time I think I got to a place really fast all by myself, the next time I get lost. But every time when we find the house quickly and I give thanks for the help of the Holy Ghost it is just as easy to find the next house. It is crazy how the Spirit works but I am so thankful to have its help in my life. It has been a blessing and I am really grateful for this gift. It is really a great gift from our Heavenly Father. And as long as we are standing in Holy Places we are entitled to it.

what a week (November 20, 2011)
We had a very eventful week...we met a bunch of different people but best of all someone was able to get beptized here in Hamamatsu! His name is Takayanagi...say that 3 times quickly maybe it's easier if it looks like 高柳. I'm not sure but anyway he got baptized!!! The spirit was really strong. He was definately a prepared soul. A few months ago he started coming to the church's outreach program and eventually one of the members told him to listen to the missionaries and so he did and he was baptized on Saturday. It was really great. A lot of members came and supported him, especially the ysa. Takayanagi is 24 so he has a lot of friends and fits in well here. I was actually supposed to speak at the baptism but I got canceled because the speaker before me took a long time. But ya he is great and you could just tell that he was so happy and filled with the spirit.
So we also met a Malaysian and some one from Sri Lanka...I'm not sure if it's spelled correctly put they are doing a home stay with a part member family. We talked with them for a while and they are both college students and really nice...they both have a little interest in religion but we had an apointment on Saturday but due to hurricane force winds and rain we weren't able to go there. I mean we actually tried to bike there but they live really far away as it is and we couldn't get a ride so we had to cancel...hopefully we will be able to met them on Saturday. We have an appointment with the Malaysian so that will be good. They are here going to college.
Best news of all...we are having a ward baseball activity!! lol... How cool is that. I think it is going to be really fun. They rented a field and we are playing baseball on saturday. No but seriously it will be fun. A lot of less actives and non members hopefully will come.
Well we have a member in our ward. He has just started coming back to church after being less active for 16 years. I actually couldn't tell that he had been less active. He seemed like such a strong member but as I listen to his story I could tell that he had had some rough times. He started by serving a mission and came back and got married and had children...but then problems started. And because of those problems he became seperated from the church. He ended up losing everything. It took me a few minutes to realize why he was so happy and so peaceful after he had lost everyhting. He is now coming back to church...active in everyway possible...he is serving people, he is participating in lessons. He has done all he can to come back and because of that he has been forgiven. Christ has taken his sins away and now he has a clean slate. That is why he is happy. Eventhough he made some mistakes he has been forgiven and has felt that peace through Christ's atonement. Just like this brother when we are down we can be forgiven, Christ can literally pick us up and help us back on the path. Takayanagi's baptism is just the start for him but he, Just like all of us, has the Holy Ghost in our lives and through the sacrament can be forgiven.

Hamamatsu (November 13, 2011)
Well it has been very sad leaving Ogaki. I mean I lived there for over 8 months. I got to know the city and the people so well. It was really sad but I'm excited to be in Hamamatsu. Hamamatsu is actually the biggest ward I've been in by far and there are a lot of young people as well...so it's very exciting. Actually Hamamatsu has a really cool single adults program called out reach. Basically on Mondays and Fridays ysa's can come to the church and meet with the missionaries, play games and we have a spiritual messages. It is supposed to help them have a choice to come to the church instead of do something not as good. So on Friday we had a massive bbq and over 10 people came. All single adults. Way fun. There was soo much meat...it was awesome. A recent convert and a person who will get baptized soon came...so that was awesome.
We also have family home evening with them on Monday nights but it seems to be way great. I'm excitied for tonight's. Well I was surprised how busy zone leaders are. It might be just this transfer but we are especially busy. President Baird asked me and my companion to meet with with all the ward mission leaders in the mission and help them be better mission leaders. There are only 6 areas in our zone so that's good but the farthest area away is about 2 1/2 hours by train...it is pretty ridiculous. And it costs a lot of money as well.
So we haven't proselyted in our new area too much but, on Saturday we met the ward mission leader in Fukuroi (the area next to ours) and that went really well. He is a really good member and will do anything to help us. After that meeting he took us out to lunch so we are like best friends. Then yesterday we had stake missionary meeting. We met with the stake president and that went really well. We were both really nervous. and we left right after church and thought we could get to the meeting on time but it took over 2 hours to get there so we were a little late. But it when really well and after he invited us over for dinner...so that was really fun. I actually know the members in other wards better than mine. So its very exciting but im excited to be in Hamamatsu. I think its a really good place and the members seem excited to help. Unfortunately I don't know the area that well. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to serve in Japan.

word of wisdom... (October 30, 2011)
Well this week has been a pretty solid week filled with adventure. Well we had a halloween party and that turned out pretty well. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves but it was fun! I spent about 500 yen on a costume and I dressed up as my companion and I think Dwight said it best, "imitation is the highest form of flattery.......Identity theft is not a Joke, Millions of people suffer every year," Yep. We also had to guys from the mafia show up...well I hope they were dressing up but they were pretty good at playing the part...lol
We have a very busy week ahead of us. We challenged our investigator that has been coming to church lately to baptism and she readily accepted. She bore her testimony that God has helped her overcome her trials in the past and that Baptism is something she would like to do. We haven't taught her all of the comandments but basically everything else has been taught. We taught her the word of wisdom yesterday and it went pretty well. She has a few bad habbits but she wants to quit and has that desire, so far she is doing well. I actaully gave up something to motivate her. I can't use any type of sauce on my food. It is hard because my parents have sent me bbq sauce and I have a habit of putting it on everything. I also can't use mayo or ketchup which just makes life difficult but it's all worth it to give Kayo motivation. She is such a great Example. One of the things I love about her is that when she first started coming to English class in July she said she had no interest in learning about the Chruch. But then after participating in the Book of Mormon Engliah class her heart has been changed...she has gained a testimony and she wants to follow the example of Jesus Christ. Basically this is how are lessons go "Kayo, what does it mean to you to have a living day Prophet" She replys "it's awesome" And just smiles. I think she is such a great example. Her baptismal date is actually this Sunday but we have a lot to teach and she needs to be able to keep the word of wisdom this week. I believe she can do it.
During sacrament meeting we sang The Iron Rod. I decided to sing it in Englsih for the first time in a long time becasue there was an englsih hymnbook next to me. The lyrics of that song hit me so hard. The 3rd verse talks about temptations and the pathway gets clouded but if you hold to the Rod, God will help you. Then in the final verse it says We can make it to the tree and Partake of the fruit of the tree of life. What a great promise that is. If we hold on to the Word of God we will get through any temptaion no matter what. All we have to do is hold to that Rod and God will help us and lead us back to him. I know God has helped me and will continue helping me!!

What?? (October 23, 2011)
Yesterday we had a pretty good day at church. there were 4 investigators that came and 3 less actives but anyway one of the investigators is married and her husband gained 45 pounds after marriage. The american in our ward also gained 45 pounds...so there is something with getting married and gaining weight.
I also feel like I'm a different person. Some people don't even recognize me when they are looking at my pictures. so I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
I like that training with the canadian guy. He sounds like he learned alot from that experience. I think that is brilliant and inspired.
I probably should tell you that Japanese people are very interested in Las Vegas and I think I have accidentaly invited 50 people to stay at our house. So if any one takes me up on that offer I apologize in advance. Alright I haven't really told 50 but maybe 20. Im pretty sure no one will take me up on it so don't worry.
An interesting side note...we met to Brits the other day. They were not too friendly to us. I don't know why we didn't even say a word about religion and they just started being mean to us...what can you do. They were with our Singapore friend and so we started talking to him and then with the Brits but they weren't to kind to us so we just left. It was interesting.
The reason I went to the police station is like 4 months ago I found a wallet with a couple of bucks in it so I took it to the police station and they said I could have the money inside. So thats why I went to the police station.
My companion is gettnig a little better at riding a bike. He umm only almost got in an accident. I was riding in front and a car passes me and all of a sudden I hear the car honk and Elder Dinkel was in the middle of the road and then quickly swerved. He was riding down the middle of the road not paying attention. But even with that he has improved greatly.
I feel like I have just rambled on forever. so I don't think I'll have time to write a real letter because I still need to write President Baird and I only have 18 minutes left but anyway it has been a good week. Like I said before investigators are doing well. We actually had a really good experience of how missionary work should be in a sense. We met our investigator on Saturday...the one who came to church last Sunday (she is doing great by the way) we met her and her friend and ask her if she is coming to church tomorrow. She says yes and then her friend gets all interested like what is church. Then the investigator starts teaching her friend about church. Then the friend and the investigator come and the friend ends up inviting her sister to come as well. And that is how it should be done. Like it was easy no pressure and now we have a bunch of new investigators and by a bunch I mean two but still that is awesome. This just doesn't happen in Japan very often so that's why I'm excited. Church has this scary image but now for them its completley good. Hopefully this helps the members see that it is not scary to invite your friends to church or church activities. We also had another student from english class come. She is awesome. Everything we ask her to do she does. She will be speaking Englsih in no time. And have the Book of Mormon finsihed in no time. It's very cool.

Back in July or June I can't quite remember but a long time ago the Elder's Quorum President told us of this less active that the missionaries use to visit but haven't in a while. I said cool and we went over and visited them. The son hadn't been to church in 30 years but he came to Sacrament Meeting yesterday!!! He felt the warm feeling that sacrament gives to you...he felt the healing power of Christ's atonement even though he hasn't come in 30 years. But his mother is not a member. She is a Buddhist and doesn't quite understand Christianity and doesn't think she can learn. When we went over there on Friday to confirm our trip to church with the son, we talked about church and the peace it brings. She finally said after 3 to 4 months of visiting her every week that she wants to go to church. It was so cool. I never thought those words would come out of her mouth but of course the spirit has power and because this is the Lord's work, people will change. Unfortunately she wasn't able to go to church yesterday but hopefully she can come this week. I really love her and this people and I'm thankful for the opportunity to come here.

すき焼き (sukiyaki) (October 16, 2011)
Well we had another interesting week here in Japan. It is starting to cool down and rained a little bit this week but it was nice.
Well I went to the police station on Saturday. I'd rather not say why I went to the police station but it was a way funny experience. So my companion and I walked through the front door and there was this police officer doing something with a teenager ,he just stops and walks up to me and asks me what I need...then I blink and there are 8 cops swarming around me. Asking me what I need...then one of them tells me that the police office is closed. I was like really they are like yes. Then they started asking me why my Japanese is so good, which always makes me happy when people ask that. But either Japanese police officers have nothing to do or that Americans look really guilty. It was just a funny experience. I'm still confused why I needed 8 cops to help me.
I also had this new dish which I'm pretty sure I haven't told anyone about. So in celebration of my birthday we went over to a members house on Monday night. So in Japan they have this portable stove thing so your food can be hot while your sitting at the table...so on that stove thing they cooked (see sometimes they cook their meat lol) meat and mushrooms and other vegetables in this sauce called sukiyaki sauce....pretty clever name if you ask me. But so they cook that and then you take an egg and crack it in a bowl...you mix it around and then when the vegetables and meat is done you take it from the pan and dip it in the raw egg and eat it. It was actually pretty good. When I come home I'll be sure to make it for everyone, so that you can see what you are missing. But that family has an 18 year old daughter that hasn't been to church in a couple of years probably because there is no one her age in the branch but she usually doesn't like listening to the lessons but we were able to teach her a powerful lesson about the book of mormon and how it can help us in our lives. Her parents are really strong members and bore testimony to her and it was a great experience.
So yesterday we a person come to church. She is 26 and is actually really good at english. She seemed to enjoy church and made many friends so that is exciting. She has such a great heart and just wants to learn more so it's great. I actually gave a talk in church which isn't unusual in a small branch. But I talked about faith and the power that we have if we have faith. I also talked about how to get faith. We have to first act and then the miracles will follow. I have seen that through my mission and throughout my life. Especially if in learning Japanese, as i try to talk to people God has blessed me with the gift of tongues.
And by the way our english class is going pretty well. We actually started the children's englsih class about a month ago and not too many people are coming so we went around to preschools and gave flyers that we made for the preschools. They volunteered to hand them out so hopefully that helps.

Well I went to the police station on Saturday. I'd rather not say why I went to the police station but it was a way funny experience. So my companion and I walked through the front door and there was this police officer doing something with a teenager ,he just stops and walks up to me and asks me what I need...then I blink and there are 8 cops swarming around me.
